    The Medicine field is going through a cultural revolution, pressed by the new knowledge emerging from the fundamental biology (molecular biology, and, more recently, genomics). This knowledge has brought to the development of the Personalized Medicine, based on the identification of the mechanisms in the disease, specific to the given disease and to the patient, and the consequent molecular treatments. Although the Personalized Medicine changed the story of some diseases, for some others there exists a rising discrepancy between the scientific discoveries and their turning into a benefit for the patient. This discrepancy is considered a problem by both the scientific community and the society. The aim of the PhD course is the training of a new generation of basic researchers, able to follow the changes occurring in the biomedicine.

    The fundamental elements of the training program are:

    • the introduction of basic subjects (mathematics, physics, informatics, statistics);
    • the teaching of new models of Translational Research, where the basic researchers work along with the clinicians on the same biomedical problems;
    • the foundation of a humanistic culture of the new scientific discoveries (foundational, ethical and sociological basis) and the operative tools (cognitive sciences) which allow the new scientists to interact with the society (patients, policy-makers).

    The doctoral programme aims to train researchers who are able to develop research projects that bridge the gap between laboratory activity and clinical sciences, facilitating the translational process in both directions.
    Aims:
    1. understand and study biological structures in the different levels of organisation, their physiological and pathological modifications in the framework of interactions between people and the environment, exploring diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and facilitating their application in clinical practice;
    2. learn a scientific translational research approach which can favour points of contact between biological and clinical-behavioural discoveries and preventive, therapeutic and rehabilitation practices in order to improve di health and lifestyle, also considering the global increase in life expectancy;
    3. acquire a solid preparation in the methodological disciplines required to formulate correct experimental hypotheses, define experimental designs and critically interpret results;
    4. promote communication between biological and clinical-behavioural research, particularly in relation to movement and physical activity in the area of prevention, mental-physical wellbeing, sport and professional performance, in conditions of health, illness and disability, in a unified perspective;

    The Master's Degree Programme in Advanced Automotive Electronic Engineering is the result of the collaboration among the Universities of Bologna, Ferrara, Modena and Reggio Emilia (administrative headquarters of the programme), Parma, and the world's most prestigious automotive companies based in the territory: Automobili Lamborghini, Dallara, Ducati, Ferrari, Haas F1 Team, HPE Coxa, Magneti Marelli, Maserati, Toro Rosso.
    The training programme starts with a semester shared by all students and organised at the University of Modena, aimed at introducing the fundamentals on high-performance vehicle design: design approach of the vehicle lay-out, manufacturing processes for the construction and assembly of the vehicles and their components, choice and use of most interesting materials in the high-performance vehicles, main mechanical consequences on systems and components. The Programme is then divided into six curricula, the contents of which have been defined jointly with the partner companies, in order to offer a professional training to the study programme based on the most advanced needs of the job market: - Advanced Powertrain (Modena and Bologna headquarters): the subjects studied are the design and the control of powertrain systems, both endothermal and electrical and hybrid, the main solutions for converting and storing the mechanical energy and the powertrain design and fabrication techniques, until the most advanced engine control and calibration. - High Performance Car Design (Modena headquarters): the subjects studied are the main drawing and design aspects, vehicle constructions, vehicle dynamics and NVH (Noise Vibration Harshness), material behaviour, mechanic technology, aerodynamic technology, thermofluidodynamics, automated controls, electronics and sensors, aerodynamics. Racing Car Design (Modena headquarters and Parma headquarters from the second year): the subjects studied are the main aspects for designing the chassis and the racing vehicle architecture, with a specific focus on the use of special materials and solutions, also considering the highly experimental nature of the development activities and the focus on aerodynamics and performance. - Advanced Motorcycle Engineering (Bologna headquarters): the subjects studied are aspects of mechanic and electronic engineering, and of industrial design which are typical of high-performance and racing motor vehicles and relate to drawing, vibration mechanics, mechanic technology, dynamics, design of endothermal powertrains and BEV, driver assistance systems. - Advanced Sportscar Manufacturing (Bologna headquarters): the subjects studied are process engineering, design of industrial systems and installations, production management and optimisation, main digital technologies of Industry 4.0 and quality control process management.
    Career options
    The Vehicle Engineer (Advanced Automotive Engineer) is a professional who starts from an industrial-based knowledge and based on an overall vehicle system overview is able to design, develop and manufacture the main subsystems making up road car and motor vehicles, with specific reference to the premium racing vehicle market. Depending on the curriculum chosen, the professional profile of the Advanced Automotive engineer specialises in: - Advanced Automotive Engineer, expert in powertrain systems. He/she is responsible for designing and collaborating in traditional and innovative powertrain system engineering, focusing on their optimisation, as well as on controlling and solving environmental and energy issues. - Advanced Automotive Engineer, expert in the architecture of road vehicles. He/she is responsible for setting up and developing the vehicle system, starting from the understanding of the fundamental aspects, and designing all main cold units and subunits of high- performance road vehicles. - Advanced Automotive Engineer, expert in the racing vehicle architecture. He/she is responsible for setting up the vehicle system, and designing all main cold units and subunits of racing vehicles. This AAE is more specialised in terms of aerodynamics, use of lightweight materials (Carbon Fibre Reinforced Materials), and has a strong ability in carrying out experimental activities. - Advanced Automotive Engineer, expert in motor vehicles. He/she is responsible for designing and developing high-tech motor vehicles, both standard and racing-specific. This AAE deals with and manages aspects that are typical of electronic engineering and industrial design, specific to motor vehicles. - Advanced Automotive Engineer, expert in production. He/she is responsible for planning, developing, monitoring and managing processes and productions systems in the automotive field, focusing on the use of the most advanced digital technologies.

    Great attention is paid to the development of language skills. Students are streamed into small groups for language tuition classes and are expected to reach a C2 and C1 level of competence (European Framework of Reference) in their two chosen languages of study, at the end of the two-year program. Advanced competences in the legal, economic, administrative and political fields are acquired through a close scrutiny of the way companies and organizations strategically manage their economic, financial, and legal procedures, in the awareness that the adopted cultural approaches, structural models, and communication techniques should facilitate negotiations with international stakeholders. The lectures are enriched with contributions from external professional experts, so as to provide students with a first-hand contact with the operational reality of the various business sectors. From the academic year 2015-2016 all lessons are taught in English, with the exception of the French, Italian, Spanish and German language courses. One- or two-year language courses in Chinese, Portuguese and Russian are also available. In addition to Erasmus exchanges students can also obtain grants to study at the University of Technology of Sydney (UTS), the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and other oversea Universities. They can also participate in the competition for admission to the “Renzo Imbeni” Summer School, which offers the opportunity to gain better insights into the workings of the European Union. Moreover, the three students who produce the best essays will receive a scholarship for an internship in Brussels at the European Parliament and/or at the Committee of the Regions. All internships allow students to apply their knowledge in the field, and in many cases, offer interesting stimuli for the drafting of the final dissertations. It is also quite common for trainees to be employed by the company where they carried out their internship.
